The Kernels cannot be bigger in any dimension than the image data.

MlibGradientOpImage
public MlibGradientOpImage(RenderedImage source, BorderExtender extender, Map config, ImageLayout layout, KernelJAI kernel_h, KernelJAI kernel_v)(Code)
Creates a MlibGradientOpImage given the image source and the pair of orthogonal gradient kernels. The image dimensions are derived from the source image. The tile grid layout, SampleModel, and ColorModel may optionally be specified by an ImageLayout object.
Parameters:
  source - a RenderedImage.
Parameters:
  extender - a BorderExtender, or null.
Parameters:
  layout - an ImageLayout optionally containing the tile grid layout,SampleModel, and ColorModel, or null.
Parameters:
  kernel_h - the horizontal kernel
Parameters:
  kernel_v - the vertical kernel

Performs Gradient on a specified rectangle. The sources are cobbled.
Parameters:
  sources - an array of source Rasters, guaranteed to provide allnecessary source data for computing the output.
Parameters:
  dest - a WritableRaster tile containing the area to be computed.
Parameters:
  destRect - the rectangle within dest to be processed.
